Rotary supports the installation of e-bike charging stations
With the rapidly expanding use of e-bikes and e-scooters the Rotary Club of Ladner, Delta, BC partnered with the City of Delta to install two free e-bike charging stations. A Rotary Foundation District Grant supports the project.
The charging stations are in a public plaza in the historic Village of Ladner.
Most e-bikes and e-scooters range between 25 and 80 km on a single charge. However, the distance varies depending on terrain, speed, riding surface, and pedal-assist level.
The charging stations allow people to bring a lock. There is a box that can be locked to secure a charger while the bike is charging. The bike may be left while they have a coffee or go shopping. The big advantage of these chargers is that riders can plan longer rides and not worry about a battery dying.
The Rotary Club believes that e-bikes and e-scooters will play a larger role in transportation, sustainability, and convenience. The charging stations are helping make it possible for more people to ride more bikes more often.
The charging dock's wheel wells accommodate wheels from 50-75 cm (20-29 in) in diameter and up to 12 cm (5 in) wide tires. Each dock has illustrated instructions for the user. An active cooling system prevents chargers from overheating while in use.
Some apartment owners and condominium councils have banned storing e-bikes inside the buildings due to a perceived fire risk. The public chargers ensure there is a safe place to charge all e-bikes.
